How to Choose a Luxury Wedding Photographer in Nashville

By Lathrop Schmidt · 6 min read

Your photographs are the one part of your wedding you'll still hold thirty years from now. Choosing who takes them deserves more than a quick scroll and a price comparison.

Nashville is full of talented wedding photographers, which is a wonderful problem to have — until you're staring at twenty browser tabs trying to tell them apart. After years of photographing weddings here, here's how I'd actually go about narrowing it down if I were the one planning.

Start with style, not price

Before anything else, decide how you want your photos to feel. Light and airy? Dark and editorial? Documentary and candid? A photographer's editing style is the hardest thing to change and the easiest thing to judge — and it's what will date, or not date, your images.

Spend time in full galleries, not just highlight reels. A great single image is easy. A great gallery — start to finish, every light, every moment — is the real signal of someone who can carry your whole day.

Look for consistency across full weddings

Ask to see two or three complete weddings, ideally at venues or times of day similar to yours. Anyone can post their ten best frames. You want to see how someone handles a dim church, a harsh noon ceremony, and a dark reception — because your day will have all three.

Trust is the whole job

Your photographer is the one vendor who's with you from the morning nerves to the last dance. They'll be in the room for your most private moments. If you don't feel completely at ease with them, it will show in your face in every frame.

The best wedding photos don't come from the best gear. They come from a couple who forgot the camera was there.

When you have your first call, notice how you feel. Do they listen? Do they ask about you, or just rattle off packages? The right photographer makes you feel calm before you've signed anything.

Questions worth asking

Fit over everything

You can find a dozen photographers in Nashville with beautiful work. The decision usually comes down to the one whose images move you and whose presence puts you at ease. That combination is rarer than it sounds — and worth holding out for.

If editorial, intentional photography is what you're drawn to, I'd love to hear about your day. You can see recent galleries here or reach out directly below.
